In 2016, Brainlab moved its headquarters to Riem, located on the grounds of the former Munich-Riem Airport. Fifty-five years ago, on February 10, 1970, three armed members of a Palestinian terrorist organization attempted to hijack an aircraft belonging to the Israeli airline El Al. The hijacking was thwarted. However, the use of firearms and grenades severely injured eleven people.
A greater tragedy was only averted thanks to the courageous actions of German-Israeli passenger Arie Katzenstein, who instinctively threw himself onto a hand grenade, sacrificing his life to protect others.
In collaboration with the city of Munich, Brainlab created the Munich-Riem 1970 memorial site and formally dedicated it on February 10, 2025. The event was attended by Munich’s Mayor Dieter Reiter, Bavarian State Parliament President Ilse Aigner, the families of the victims, and Talya Lador-Fresher, Consul General of the State of Israel.
At the heart of the memorial site stands an 8.30-meter-tall metal sculpture by internationally renowned artist Alicja Kwade. Three gilded clock faces, modeled after the clock on the former airport tower, display the detonation times of the explosives.
This memorial combines art with remembrance and offers the people of Munich an opportunity to learn about the events through an information panel and a dedicated website.

“Brainlab is dedicated, among other things, to brain surgery and thus to the organ of memory. But equally important is the memory of the place where we pursue our activities. This memory is shaped by collective remembrance, by knowledge of the past. It compels us to reflect on who we are and, more importantly, who we aspire to be.” said Stefan Vilsmeier Brainlab Company Founder.
